The recoil spring controls how fast the slide travels rearward and how hard it returns to battery. It is a wear part with a service life, and a tired spring shows up as sluggish cycling, brass landing much closer than it used to, or the slide failing to fully return.
How fitment works
Springs are matched to the guide rod assembly, so generation and frame size both matter — Gen 1–3 single-spring and Gen 4–5 dual-spring systems are not interchangeable. Aftermarket springs come in different weights, and heavyweight springs are usually intended for use with a heavyweight steel or tungsten guide rod rather than the OEM rod.

Choosing and fitting
Heavier is not automatically better. Over-spring the pistol and light target loads will short-cycle; under-spring it and you batter the frame. Replace on a schedule rather than by feel — springs degrade gradually enough that you will not notice until reliability has already suffered.
