The magazine release is the catch that drops the magazine out of the frame. Extended releases give you a larger, higher pad so you can reach it without breaking your firing grip — the main reason competitors change it — while the OEM part sits nearly flush to reduce the chance of dropping a magazine against a holster or seatbelt.
How fitment works
The big compatibility divide is Gen 1–3 versus Gen 4–5. Gen 4 introduced the reversible magazine catch, so the parts are not interchangeable across that line. Calibre matters too: 9mm/.40/.357 magazines and 10mm/.45 ACP magazines use different catch geometry, so a release cut for one will not reliably retain the other.

Choosing and fitting
If you carry appendix or in a tight holster, an aggressively extended release is a genuine liability — body pressure can release the magazine without you noticing. A modest extension is the sensible compromise. Whatever you fit, load a magazine and press the pistol firmly against your body from several angles before trusting it.
