Glock Magazine Compatibility Guide

1 min read

Magazines are the most common source of stoppages in any semi-automatic pistol, which makes them the part least worth economising on. A Glock magazine is a steel-lined polymer body with a follower, spring and floor plate, and the body profile is what determines what it will fit.

How fitment works

Compatibility runs on calibre and frame size, then generation. Larger-frame guns will generally accept magazines from smaller guns in the same calibre — a G17 magazine runs in a G19 — but not the reverse, since the shorter body will not reach the catch. Gen 5 magazines changed the body and follower, and the slim guns (43, 43X, 48) share nothing with the double-stack line.

Choosing and fitting

Buy OEM or a well-established aftermarket brand for anything you carry, and keep range-only magazines visually marked so they never end up in a defensive gun. Number your magazines: when a stoppage happens, knowing which magazine it came from is the difference between finding the fault and guessing at it.
