The guide rod sits under the barrel and captures the recoil spring, controlling how the slide travels and returns. It is one of the few cheap parts that measurably changes how a Glock feels to shoot: a heavier steel or tungsten rod adds weight low and forward, which flattens muzzle rise a little and slows slide velocity.
How fitment works
Generation matters more here than almost anywhere else. Gen 1–3 use a single captured spring; Gen 4 and 5 use a dual-spring assembly with a different rod diameter, and they are not cross-compatible. Frame size is the second axis — full size, compact and subcompact assemblies differ in length, and the slim-frame 43/43X/48 guns use their own again.

Choosing and fitting
Match the spring weight to what you shoot. A heavier spring tames full-power or +P loads but can short-cycle with light target ammunition. If you change spring weight, function-test with the ammunition you actually carry, and check that the slide locks back reliably on an empty magazine.
